Going Beyond My Reach

By the middle of August, I reached a peak in my health. I was brimming with energy and confidence. It was then that I decided to register for four courses in the Special Education Department at the George Peabody School at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. I was determined to resume my education, to pick up my life at the point where it had been diverted by disease. I had two more semesters to complete to get my degree. Once I was finished with college, I could be a teacher of disabled and handicapped children. That had been my ambition before I became sick. Now that I was well, I was more ambitious than ever.

My course load required that I be at Vanderbilt three days a week—Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—starting at 9 A.M., for an early morning class, and finishing at around 5 P.M., for my last afternoon class. The George Peabody School is an hour and a half from Centerville, which meant that I would have a three-hour commute each day. Chrisi and I would drive in to Nashville each morning, where my aunt would take care of her while I was in classes. My mother would help with Chrisi after she returned home from work. Still, that was a long day, I realized. But I was well and Chrisi would be fine, I told myself. And I was finally resuming my life.

Little did I realize that there was still a lot I had to learn about health and balance.
